Pillow Talk: Diane's Bedroom Decor

that feeling when you seen another bedroom you wish was yours *eyeroll*

We’re delighted to announce our new series ‘Pillow Talk’, where we’ll be speaking to individuals about their bedroom decor, the process behind it, the struggles, the joys, the budgets and more. Why? Because we’re nosey in all honestly. Bedrooms are personal and intimate and so naturally, we wanna know about them. For our first ever Pillow Talk feature, we’ll be speaking to the lovely Diane Hill – you may have heard of her already as she was one of our original Style Files interviewee’s. See her home here. Please bow down to the Queen of Murals as she lets us snoop around and get some great bedroom decor ideas…

Was there a planning process behind the design?

It really was a work in progress, it sat very blank for two years as we put all out efforts into designing and decorating the kids rooms. Ours just fell short! We had initially painted all the walls white at least, but other than that it was just the basic furnishings. After itching to paint something more abstract I thought – well why not here! That then led to a complete overhaul of the room. I knew I wanted pink and my husband never minds either way! So the rest really was designed around the mural. Pink lampshade from Ikea, gold and concrete lamps from Very, bedside tables and furniture all Ikea.

I really am always a fan of combining my murals with flat white walls and in this case flat white plain furniture and mirrored wardrobes to give a really contemporary feeling. The paint finish behind the alcove shelving was a last min thing only took a few hours, I just wanted something soft that tied it all in. I finished by adding a little gallery wall of lots of charity shop frames and my own photos of my kids – which is lovely to wake up to! That is the chimney breast wall and is a really awkward space to decorate.

What was the inspiration behind the mural?

I have been seeing lots of textures recently of all sorts of marbles, stones and rough broken plasters. My favourite artist is Matisse for his more abstract works. I know pink is on trend but it’s always been my all time favourite colour! After creating so many chinoiserie murals, I really had the desire to show people what else I can do!

Did you have any different ideas/ plans for the bedroom?

Yes I was thinking of a lavender lush vibe! I had created a Pinterest board of images. I wanted to paint a mural in greens and lavenders onto silver leaf. With lavender painted walls, velvet soft furnishings and lots of silver and gold. But it all scared me a little and basically, I just love pink!

What’s your top tip for creating the perfect bedroom?

Ultimately it needs to be cosy as it is the one place that is purley yours, so I think it requires a huge burst of your own personality. The bed and the wall behind it are always going to be the focal point – so really hone in on how you could add interest to that area, ideally in a calming way as good sleep is so important!
