4 CRUCIAL STEPS TO CREATING A ROOM DESIGN FROM SCRATCH

we've already made the mistakes, so you can learn from them.

It seems to be that a lot of our clients come to us really having no clue on how to design a room – and yes, we are so happy to hold your hand and do the process for you – in fact we charge you for it… but  if you want to do it on your own so you can say ‘yep, I did this all by myself’ then we’ve put together our 4 crucial steps to starting your design process. It’s really important you plan things out before rushing in to painting or buying furniture – and this is talking from experience. Sometimes it’s so tempting to just start getting stuck in, when in actual fact you could make it so much better. Try these simple steps and we think you’ll be amazed with the result…

TIP 1 GET INSPIRATION

Be this from books, instagram, pinterest or the homes of friends and family, inspiration is always key in seeing what you like and don’t like. Take elements from designs you’ve seen and make them your own. Houzz as well can be really useful to literally search for any type of design and you can store your ideas in an ‘ideabook’ – literally like a virtual scrap book. You can view our ideabooks with our clients hereFor Christmas I was given the book pictured – it’s really design-awakening and nice to have a hard copy of something to refer back to for ideas.

TIP 2 CHOOSE YOUR COLOUR SCHEME

Typically we suggest using a duo or trio of colours per room, this will create your foundation for your scheme. E.g. Aqua & Orange. Don’t add more than this otherwise the room can look overbearing and cramped and not well designed. You can however mix this trio in with neutral and a hint of black to make it flow. TIP 3 CREATE A MOOD BOARD

Not only is this genuinely quite a fun thing to do in your spare time, it’s actually so useful in helping you see all your ideas in one place. There are two ways of doing this – you can collaborate ideas, colours, images you like etc, or you can start sourcing your items online and put these items into a mood board. I find the latter most useful, as sometimes in my head I think items will work together, but when I see them next to each other – they don’t! I use microsoft power point to create my moodboards, but I know some people also like canva.

TIP 4 DON’T BE AFRAID OF WHAT PEOPLE WILL THINK

Everyone has different tastes, styles and visions of what a space could look like – but no one knows what a space should look like. It’s up to you – what you make think is inviting and cosy, another may think is cramped and cluttered. But who cares? It’s you that is going to be living in this space so make it your own. Don’t be afraid of adding in some fun, quirkiness – show off your personality. Your home can be a visual extensions of yourself – so make that clear to those you invite in. Be proud of your design and have confidence
