It’s time for another House Tour Style Files No 7, and this one is not one for the Scandi minimalist lovers.   You know too well that we like to speak to people with boundary pushing, well designed homes, in the aim to inspire you to let loose with your personal style. And this week is no exception as we speak to Nicola whose dark home got me closing my jaw with my hand as soon as I caught eyes on it. I’ve been excited to show you this one for some time now, so please enjoy…

The Style Files: Bringing you boundary pushing interior design to swoon over.

What was the design process behind your home?

My home style has evolved over a number of years and will continue to do so, being eclectic in style, I keep adding to it or changing things around. My general design ethos is to use dark and cosy paint colours, wallpaper to add texture and pattern and then colour, predominantly in the soft furnishings. I love art, which I source from all sorts of places from vintage finds to etsy, eBay, or through instagram where there is a wide range of specialist independent suppliers.

What is the inspiration behind your home?

I source inspiration from many different sources. I am a big user of instagram where there is a fantastic community of like minded interior people, I read interiors magazines such as Livingetc and Elle Decor but mostly my inspiration comes from trial and error, understanding what will work in our Victorian home, or finding an item that I really want to make work in a room and planning around it, whether it be a paint colour, a sofa or wallpaper.

  1. What would be your advice to someone who wants to create  a home like yours?
This is a tricky one since my style has evolved and my collection of home items have been curated over 15 years.  Our home is victorian so we’ve been lucky to have a lot of the original features still in place (and if not we’ve put them back) so i try to bring some of the traditional but with a hint of modern, vintage finds and texture. My decor style comes from my gut, I know what will work and what won’t but I’d say that you can’t go wrong with cosy dark colours and texture – they are a must in any room to create interest. Lighting is also key, I have several lamps in every room, so that the overhead lights are rarely switched on.

How would you define your style?
maximalist, eclectic, colourful, vintage

IF YOU COULD ONLY OWN ONE HOMEWARE ITEM WHAT WOULD IT BE?

An original Eames long chair since I love reading and would happily curl up in there everyday
