The Style Files No. 22

our Athina welcomes you into her home!

This week is quite a personal Style Files house tour as we enter…my home! Yes, Athina here. I moved into my flat in South West London about a year ago – as a renter – with some vision and a small budget. Over the year I’ve painted many walls, then painted over those many walls. I’ve bought furniture and returned it, bought accessories and…returned them – despite the fact I design peoples homes on a regular basis, I somehow struggle to do my own. My problem is that I like too many schemes / colours / styles etc, so it’s difficult to narrow everything down. Anyways, I’ve finally got it looking to a standard at which I’m happy to share with you so I hope you enjoy!

What’s your inspiration for your home?

My inspiration from scandi designs as I like the cleanliness of their interior style – but sometimes it’s a little too minimalistic for me. I started to look at other cultures and their interiors. For example I added accessories which have intricate detail in them such as my Morrocan cushions or Thai temple rubbings as I realised the intricacy of these worked well with the clean-cut Scandi look – they seemed to balance each other out. I guess you could say I like the Scandi-Boho vibe.

Was there a design process behind your home?

Not really to be honest! Because I do so much planning for other peoples homes, when it came to my own space I was so excited and raring to go, I just went for it. I just wanted to buy things I liked and make it work later. For a few months I had that approach but soon realised planning was essential as I ended up returning a lot of the items and more tediously re-painting a lot of walls again…in short, it was a lot of trial and error. From here I started planning and making mood boards and that’s when the rooms started coming together.

What’s your best advice for creating a home like yours?

Don’t be afraid of trial and error. If something doesn’t quite fit in the space or is just plain wrong, don’t force it to make it right!

Money no object, where would your dream home be?

I’ve always loved the thought of living on a ranch in Southern America but equally love the idea of a beach house on a Pacific island somewhere…

If you could only own one homeware item, what would it be and why?

I’d love a big Abigail Ahern beaded chandelier or a big chunky knitted blanket, although perhaps both these are a bit cliche now!
