The Style Files No. 26

renovation, renovation, renovation.

We’ve been admiring Sharon’s Instagram for months, so we’re thrilled she agreed to do a Style Files House Tour for us. Sharon lives in a former coach house located in Cuckfield, West Sussex. She’s extensively extended, renovated & modernised turning it from a gloomy 2 bedroom property into a whopping 5 bed family home – go Sharon! It comes as no surprise that she carries out interior projects and is going to start her own print collection soon. OH, and she wanted us to mention she loves Gin – well who bloody doesn’t? After this post, I’m off for one myself…

Check out more of Sharon’s home on her Instagram here

What’s the inspiration behind your home?

My dream would be to live in a New York loft apartment, as I love the industrial style, with their exposed brick and huge windows. I also love the Scandi style, though I wouldn’t want an all white home. I use greys, blues and love rustic textures and natural materials, so I guess both of these have inspired me. As much as I can, I also buy things made here in the UK. The oak on the back of the Island is strips of old sea groynes from Brighton beach. Instagram has been a great source of small UK homeware businesses for me and they are my first port of call when buying things for the house now – they’re usually better quality and value than the high street too.

Was there a design process behind your home?

We extended the house adding a kitchen diner and en-suite bedroom downstairs. On the first floor we added 2 further bedrooms upstairs and reconfigured the whole layout – only the bathroom downstairs remains untouched. Upon buying the house it was very dark so we added skylights in 4 areas of the house and bi-fold doors across the back of the kitchen extension to let the light floor in. When we built the kitchen I sourced local reclaimed bricks for the internal wall which was something I had always wanted. All the flooring was replaced with limed oak boards downstairs and pale grey carpets. We repainted all the walls in the living areas F&B Manor House Grey.

What’s your best advice for creating a home like yours?

If you are going for a full house renovation like ours, take your time to make the big (and often expensive) decor decisions such as flooring, tiles, lighting etc. It took me two years to make a final decision on the entrance hall tiles as I knew they would always be there, so I wanted to get it right! Use Pinterest to get ideas and styles you love and see if you still love them a few months later…don’t be afraid to mix styles or go for a bold or dark paint. Say you don’t like it, you can always change it. Chances are if you’ve thought about it, you are going to love it!

If you could only own one homeware item, what would it be?

It would be a huge oak four poster bed, I’ve always wanted one – I’d love it to be big enough for all of us to fit on to sit and chat on a Sunday morning with a cuppa.

How would you define your style?

A mix of Scandinavian, rustic, hygge and a bit of industrial chic thrown in there for good measure! I use grey and blues on the walls both dark and light. I love tactile fabrics and lots of texture from materials like brick, wood and of course lots of plants.
