The Style Files No. 19

did someone say pink?

This weeks Style Files house tour interviewee, Harley, is a mum of one who works full-time in administration for a telecommunications company. She’s a testament to the fact that you don’t have to own a home to make it your own, as she’s been renting her house since July 2016…

…Whilst taking influences from mags like Living etc from a young age, Harley’s been forever dreaming of how she could make her home special and today she’s been kind enough to explain how she’s done this. Prepare to be shown some serious style – and learn that pink can be a truly workable, unisex colour to use in your home.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Mainly Pinterest and Instagram! I love how you can search for just about anything on Pinterest and get tonnes of inspiration and Instagram almost has its own interiors-obsessed ‘community’. I love being able to interact with so many like-minded people that live nowhere near me in real-life.

What was the design process of your home?

We moved in to a very magnolia house that was a total blank canvas but we had never set out to decorate anywhere properly. Simple because we had always been in flats on short tenancies, so we wanted to make as many changes as we could without ripping up carpet etc. I could see this place as our home as soon as we viewed it and before we even moved in I was certain I wanted to use two of my favourite colours, pink and grey.

I’m very lucky that my partner doesn’t consider pink too ‘girly’. He loves the dining room! Before we moved in, I kept looking back at the Rightmove photos of each room and creating mood boards and wish lists for every space, so we could buy as much as possible in advance. Everything is decorated to personal taste and not just current fashion, so it wasn’t risky. I planned so much before we moved so I knew I wouldn’t get bored of anything as I only chose what I loved.

What’s your best advice for creating a home like yours?

Don’t buy anything that you don’t love and don’t buy something just because it’s on trend. Don’t be afraid of using colour – people turned their nose up to the idea of a pink dining room but it’s our favourite room in the house! We’ve had so many compliments on it and it’s even inspired others to paint their dining space the same shade. Don’t believe the whole ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ thing – charity shops are cheap and amazing. Spending £1000 on a sofa is great if you can afford it, but it doesn’t mean a £200 one is going to break and be uncomfortable. Style is always achievable on a budget.

Money no object, where would you dream home be?

The absolute dream would be a pretty 3-4 bedroom mews house in Notting Hill. It would have a pink front door and a big, bright and airy open plan living and dining space with a conservatory and garden. I’m a city girl but not a fan of living on a busy main road like I currently do. The little mews streets make you feel like you’re in a dainty village even when you’re in the middle of London.

If you could only own one homeware item, what would it be and why?

My pink armchair! I absolutely love it and it was a very lucky Amazon find after lusting over many pricier pink armchairs on other sites.

How would you define your style?

Fun, eclectic and a little Scandi . I used to drool over the monochrome Scandinavian interiors on Pinterest and then when it actually came to decorating my home I just couldn’t see myself living somewhere like that. Having colour in every room makes the house feel fun & bright and I like to see our home as an extension of our personalities! I really enjoy finding new ways to cram in some colour and pattern to make a happy space for ourselves and daughter Lola.
