The Style Files No. 4

now this is what we call serious style

Welcome to the fourth edition of ‘The Style Files’ our (relatively) new regular feature. In each edition we speak to people with inspiring homes. Last time we spoke to Karine whose scandi minimalist home got us all relaxed – click here to view. But this week we’re taking a trip to Jayne’s home, which has a more quirky and bold appearance. Think lots of humorous objects and flashy colours…

… To introduce you to Jayne, she’s a fellow Brit living abroad in Turkey for the past 28 years. Working as a hotelier she’s always had a passion for interior design and designing her home from scratch last year, has got her creative juices flowing and spurred her to create her passion into a career. You go girl! Abigail Ahern should watch out, cos this lady has some serious style!

The Style Files: Bringing you boundary pushing interior design to swoon over.

What was the design process behind your home?

  1. We have only been in our present home for 1 year and we were really lucky in that we bought it off plan so I was able to pick all the finishes myself and I had a blank canvas to start off with. Our previous home was all white and cream so with this house I was ready to let my creative streak go wild. I scoured Pinterest and any other sources I could get my hands on and made mood boards for each room by cutting out any pictures that I took an instant like to. This really helped, as seeing the images in front of me focused my mind and miraculously sourcing products came easily.

What is the inspiration behind your home?

I can’t put my finger on just one inspiration behind my house, other than the fact that I just knew that I wanted my house to be a bit different and quirky from the typical houses that you get in Turkey. I decided the best way to do this would be through paint colours and accessories, as changing the furniture wasn’t an option due to cost. I wanted it to be full of things that please me and make our visitors wonder where to look next. I think as I’ve got older I am a lot more confident in my approach to interior design and I’ve learned to trust my instincts.

  1. What would be your advice to someone who wants to create  a home like yours?

My advice to someone who wants to create a home like mine would be to do what makes you happy. Trust your instincts, do your research, get inspiration from lots of sources but go with your own judgement. People are always willing to offer you advice whether you ask for it or not, but go with your gut feeling and find your own unique style. The more you do this the more confident you become in your design.

How would you define your style?
Eclectic!

How would you define your style?

My style is best described as eclectic. I have collected things over the years and numerous new additions just add to the mix. I love a bargain and will buy something if I really like it and then worry about finding a home for it later.

If you could own only one home ware item what would it be?

I think this question is definitely the hardest trying to narrow it down to one favorite homeware so I am going to be cheeky and name two! The first would be my Ibride ostrich console. I sourced it on eBay and it has pride of place in my entrance hallway. Every time I  open the door it is the first thing I see and it never fails to make me smile. A close second would have to be my bird leg marble side table. I had a picture of this table in my mind but couldn’t find it anywhere in my price range. So I went to the local ironmongers, drawing and measurements in hand, and despite a few strange looks and comments, my table legs came to fruition. Then with bird legs in hand, went to the local marble supplier and hey presto a table top was born. I love this piece as it is unique to me and I helped to create it.
